It contains glycine, which can help detox the body and fight inflammation and collagen, a protein which supports the gut, skin, muscles, bones and joints.

Bone broth is often recommended for treating leaky gut, which is a common problem for people with autoimmune conditions, such as Hashimotos, Psoriasis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Chronic Fatigue, to name a few.

And, because it’s packed full of vitamins and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium and phosphorous, it’s an ideal drink to have when you’re feeling sick with a head cold. Use your broth when a recipe calls for stock or have it as a standalone drink.

You will find that this homemade beef broth will improve the flavour of your dishes too!

I sometimes have a cup of bone broth when I’m cleansing, it means that I’m still getting good nutrition and support during my times of cleansing and it also helps my weight loss management when I need it.

This is a beef recipe, were I roasted the bones first before adding to the slow cooker. I didn’t do this last time when I made my Lamb Bone Broth. But since then, I’ve read various blogs and recipes that suggested roasting the bones first, as it helps give more flavour.

So, I thought that this time, I would give roasting the bones a go.

I used what I had in the kitchen already, focussing on vegetables, herbs and spices that I know are good for you. Don’t worry if you don’t have exactly the same, just use what you have in your kitchen. Typically, most bone broths contain the basics of carrot, celery and onion as a start.

I added one of my favourite leafy green vegetable Kale but this is optional. I used kale because it’s a superfood full of Vitamin A, C and K. The Kale did give a Brussel sprout smell, which I didn’t mind, whilst cooking, so if you don’t like that smell, maybe leave it out.

And now for the recipe…

My Beef Bone Broth Ingredients:

2 Carrots

2 Bay Leaves

1 Teaspoon Turmeric Powder

1/2 Teaspoon Black Pepper

1/2 Teaspoon Salt

2 Litres filtered Water (2 Quarts)

Putting It Together:

Heat oven to 400 degrees F

I roasted the beef marrow bone for 30min in a hot oven. I turned them after 15 mins.

I washed and chopped all the vegetables.

I washed and chopped the Garlic and Herbs

I put the roasted bones into the slow cooker and poured the apple cider vinegar on top.

I added the chopped vegetables, garlic and herbs.

Finally, I added the filtered water and stirred it all around.

I cooked the bone broth in the slow cooker for 24 hours on low heat. You can cook longer and I’ve seen recipes that suggest cooking for up to 72 hours. I think that you would need to add more water if you cooked it for a longer time

Once it was cooked, I removed the bones, the vegetables and the herbs that had broken down. Then I strained the broth to remove the remaining small bits of vegetables and herbs. I ended up with a liquid broth which had a layer of fat glistening on the top.

I poured the broth into a Mason Jar and put it into the fridge to cool. Once cooled I could easily scrape off the fat that had solidified on the top.

Now it was ready to use.

I found that this recipe produced less broth that when I made a Lamb Broth earlier. It also seemed to be more solid and I believe more concentrated.

When I used the broth as a drink or for when stock is called for in a recipe, I diluted it slightly with filtered water. This made the broth go further.

The broth can last in the fridge for up to 3 days and you can freeze it. Don’t freeze it in the Mason Jar as it may crack. Use a suitable container. I filled an ice cube tray with some broth, which makes it easy to use in manageable portions.
