Learn the truth here.

The idea that there are Superfoods, is a relatively new one. This concept has gained popularity in recent years, coinciding with the increased interest in health and nutrition.

But, is it based on truth or is it marketing hype?

You be the judge.

There is no technical definition for the word “Superfood”, however the Oxford Dictionary states, a Superfood is “a nutrient rich food, considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being”.

That makes sense!

Wikipedia’s stance, is that “it is a marketing term, used to describe foods with a supposed health benefit”.

Well, the marketers have certainly got behind the idea and many are making big dollars out of it!

In 2007, EU rules came into effect, banning the use of the term Superfood. For the almost 100 products that have been described as a Superfood, the onus of proof is now on the companies to prove their claims.

Despite this, the market for Superfoods has continued to grow.

Some Superfoods are claimed to prevent diseases, even Cancer. The leafy green vegetables, yellow/orange vegetables, citrus and cruciferous group have been associated with these health claims.

Many of the Superfoods do in fact contain natural chemicals such as antioxidants, Vitamins and minerals, that have been shown to provide positive health benefits in laboratory studies. However, the dose of these chemicals used are very high and pure, more than just eating a bowl of blueberries. So, it’s suggested that you may not get enough of the benefiting nutrient to produce the same benefit found in the laboratory.

Many clinical studies that look at the health benefits of Superfoods, use animal models such as rats or in vitro studies, which means in a laboratory not in a human. The benefit in a petri dish cannot suggest definite benefit in humans eating the Superfood in a diet.

Blueberries are one of the most popular and well known of the Superfoods, they are a regular in my fridge.

Blueberries are one of the highest antioxidant foods, and it’s no wonder that they appear high on many Superfoods lists. They contain Resveratrol which is also found in the skin of grapes used to make wine. They have anthrocyanins a type of flavonoid and gallic acid, a powerful anti-fungal/antiviral agent which has lots of peer reviewed scientific references.

So where does that lead us?

What are we to deduce from this information?

You can make your own mind up about it, as I have.

I decided from my research, that the Superfoods which are whole foods, such as Kale, Spinach, Salmon, Eggs, Berries, Almonds, Broccoli, Avocado, Flaxseeds to name a few, are all full of various nutrients that are vital for good health.

I believe that you can’t attribute one food to a specific health outcome. Inside the body, the nutrients work with each other to produce health benefits. No one Superfood is the magic bullet to cure diseases. The body is a complex organism and will respond differently to nutrients compared to what is tested in a petri dish.

I believe that eating foods rich in antioxidants are good for you because they fight highly reactive free radicals and metabolic bi-products that cause harm to our bodies.

I believe that by eating vegetables from the, “colours of the rainbow”, organic fish and lean meats, a variety of colourful fruits as well as nuts and seeds, will give my body all the nutrients it needs to keep my immune system healthy, so it can help fight disease and help me age well.

Variety is the key for me. I don’t think that you can go wrong eating healthy whole foods, whether they be labelled Superfoods or not.

I will look out for the marketed packaged Superfoods, because I understand that sometimes the labelling is just marketing, and I will look out for the hidden dangers of consuming products that are combined with high trans fats, high sugar and preservatives, which I know are not good for my body.
