How To Make Bone Broth -Heal Your Leaky Gut

You need this!

After much reading, I have learnt that one of the best ways to help heal leaky gut, is to drink bone broth.

Bone broths (aka stock), are nutrient dense, easy to digest and taste delicious. Our ancestors drank bone broth and bone broth is a staple food in the diets of almost every culture today.

It’s the slow simmering process which causes the bones and ligaments to release all their healing compounds. Amino acid, collagen, minerals and fat-soluble vitamins are all released to help reduce inflammation and boost the immune system.

Medical specialists such as Dr Josh Axe, in his book, ‘Eat Dirt’, recommends that his patients do a bone broth fast for three days, to give their leaky gut time to reboot and repair itself.

I decided to give it a go, and share my experience making my very own Bone Broth. I used a recipe that I found in Dr Mark Hymans book ‘Eat Fat Get Thin.’

It was quite easy to make, although due to the recommended simmering time 12-24 hours, I did 23 hours, it can be a little while before you get to sample your work.  But I promise you, it’s well worth it.

I made a delicious batch on my first attempt and plan to make some more.

Dr Hyman’s Veggie Bone Broth

4 Pounds (1.8Kg) soup bones (Lamb, Beef, Chicken, Turkey, Bison, Venison, Duck Organic or grass fed is best.

2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

2 carrots, roughly chopped

2 sticks celery, roughly chopped

1 medium onion

2 garlic cloves, smashed

2 bay leaves

1 bunch parsley

1 tbs sea salt

2 quarts (1.9L) filtered water

Place all the bones in a slow cooker and drizzle with apple cider vinegar. Add the veggies, herbs and salt. Add the water and stir to combine.

Set the slow cooker on low for 12-24 hours.

I chose Lamb, my favourite meat. As I mentioned earlier, I slow cooked mine for 23 hours. The smell in the house was mouth-watering.

I have subsequently made a Healing Beef Bone Broth

Once it’s cooked, you need to separate the bones, vegetables and herbs.

I picked out the meat and saved it for later use on a salad, and for my cat who really enjoyed it!

I poured the liquid through a sieve into a bowl and started ladling off the golden yellow fat. (You could skip this step and pour the sieved juice into the glass jars and skim the fat off later when its cooled).

I then poured the broth into my glass jars. Notice there was still a little fat left on top. I skimmed this off once it had cooled in the fridge.

Finally, my bone broth was ready and I heated it up in a mug. It was so delicious I nearly forgot to take a photo of it!
